Start with the family decision, not the adviser.
Bali families may already have a school counsellor, tutor or university-pathway provider. Independent advice is useful only when a defined cross-country decision, family constraint or execution gap remains after that support is understood.
The question is not which adviser has the longest university list. It is whether the family can make the next important decision with current evidence, clear ownership and no hidden incentive.
What decision is still genuinely open?
Write down the live countries, courses, qualification routes, application window and family constraints. If the family cannot name a decision, another adviser may only add information rather than clarity.
Is the advice independent of a placement incentive?
Ask whether the adviser receives university, school or agent commission. A family-paid adviser should disclose the incentive structure and should not imply privileged access or a guaranteed result.
Does the scope fit the decision?
A useful scope names the meetings, written outputs, application support and boundaries before payment. Beware a long activity list that never says who decides what or what happens when the family changes direction.
Will the student remain the author?
Essay brainstorming and editing can be ethical when the student supplies the substance and remains responsible for the work. Ghostwriting, fabricated activities and promises about influence are warning signs.
Can an adult test the fit quickly?
A short phone call or Google Meet should be available before any long engagement. No student documents or sensitive family details should be needed for the first conversation.
What independent cross-system judgment looks like.
A family may be comparing an Indonesian, Australian, UK, US, Canadian, European or Asian route while the student's curriculum and the family's location remain in motion. The useful work is to compare evidence, subjects, course design, total cost, geography, deadlines and risk before shortlisting.
